The Le Castellet sampling site (elevation 103 meters) is located in the western part of the Var department (Southeastern France), between the Mediterranean Sea to the south and the Sainte-Baume massif (culminating at 1148 m) to the north. The climate is Mediterranean, including extreme “Mediterranean-type” precipitation events with up to 100 mm of rain falling per day, and a very heterogeneous temporal distribution of rainfall, with little or no rain falling during the summer. The average annual rainfall measured at the nearest Météo-France station (located 7 km from the Le Castellet station, at an elevation of 417 m) is 689 mm (for the years 1991 to 2020), and the average interannual temperature is 13.7°C.
